Dental Emergencies

We at Pediatric Dental Specialists of Western Colorado understand that dental emergencies are often very stressful and uncomfortable experiences.

We know dental emergencies are also confusing with many people not sure whether or not to call their dentist or go to the nearest hospital emergency department. Prevention is always key but we know it’s not always possible. We are here to help and have a dentist on call 24/7.

**Important note** Any severe blow to the head and broken jaw or injury that results in excessive and uncontrollable bleeding should be taken to the nearest hospital immediately.

Prevention is Key!

The best way to minimize or avoid damage and stress from dental emergencies is prevention. Preventing emergencies from a weakened enamel caused by tooth decay involves maintaining good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing daily.

To prevent dental trauma from sports activities, proper protective equipment is very important. Mouth guards significantly help protect a child’s teeth during potentially high-impact sports such as soccer, football, wrestling, or hockey. Our pediatric dentists can offer advice on what mouth guard is right for your child.

Other sports gear such as helmets and face shields can also help to prevent oral/facial injuries in sports. Please feel free to discuss regular sports activities with our pediatric dentists.

Dental emergencies can be stressful for both you and your child. Understanding the different types of dental emergencies, as well as how best to respond, can minimize pain, anxiety, and long term problems.
